Inferencias acerca de la migración y domesticación del género Capsicum (ajíes y pimientos) en Cuba Inferences about the migration and domestication of the Capsicum genus (peppers) in Cuba Barrios Govin, Odalys Fuentes Fiallo, Víctor Acuña Fernández, Gloria Shagarodsky Scull, Tomás Abreu Hernández, Sergio Capsicum domestication migration Capsicum domesticación migración Se estudió el posible proceso de domesticación que sufrieron las especies de Capsicum en Cuba y su localización en América antes y después de la Conquista, con la intención de esclarecer las probables rutas de migración de los taxones de Capsicum hacia la Isla en estas dos épocas. Se comprobó que en Cuba está presente el complejo Capsicum annuum-chinense-frutescens, con amplia distribución a través de todo el territorio. La ruta de migración común para las tres especies, se supone que fue desde Sur América vía Las Antillas, en el caso de C. annuum fue posiblemente introducida después de la Conquista con la trata de esclavos desde las Islas Bahamas y Florida, se considera además, el probable arribo a la Isla de C. chinense desde la península de Yucatán. La migración de C. frutescens debió haber ocurrido desde las Islas de Caribe. Existen evidencias que suponen que el cv. ´Chile Habanero´ (C. chinense cultivado) pudo haber sido introducido al Continente desde la Isla. Las especies del complejo debieron haber sido introducidas con algún nivel de domesticación y continuar este proceso independientemente de las formas que le dieron origen, lo que dio lugar a que una interesante variabilidad se desarrollará a partir de la selección humana y natural y la adaptación al medio, con la presencia de 39 cultivares diferentes de ajíes y pimientos en la actualidad. The possible domestication process was studied that suffered the species of Capsicum in Cuba and its localization in America before and after the Conquest, with the intention of clarifying the probable routes of migration of the taxa of Capsicum toward the Island in these two times. It was verified that in Cuba it is present the Capsicum annuum-chinense-frutescens complex, with wide distribution through the whole territory. The route of common migration for the three species, it supposed that it was from South America-West Indies, in the case of C. annuum it was possibly introduced after the Conquest with it is about slaves from the Bahamas Islands and Florida, it is also considered, the probable arrival to the Island of C. chinense from the Yucatan. The migration of C. frutescens should have happened from the Caribbean Islands. Evidences that suppose exist that the cv. ´Chile Habanero´ (C. chinense cultivated) have been introduced to the Continent from the Island. The species have been introduced to the Island with some domestication level and to continue this process independently of the forms that made origin themselves. An interesting variability has been developed starting from the human and natural selection and the adaptation to the natural conditions, with 39 different cultivars presence of peppers at the present time.
