Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertn. (karité o árbol mantequilla, Sapotaceae), recurso forestal presente en Cuba Vitellaria paradoxa C. F. Desde principios de la década de 1960, existe en la propiedad una especie, actualmente con grandes dimensiones, donada con el nombre de árbol mantequilla por el notable ingeniero forestal Alberto Fors. Hasta el presente, sin embargo, se desconocía su identidad taxonómica. Se realizó una búsqueda documental a partir del nombre vulgar, y arrojó que, bajo la denominación de karité (mantequilla en África Occidental) se identifica a Vitellaria paradoxa, árbol de la familia Sapotaceae, cuya descripción coincide con la especie cultivada en la finca de la familia Muñoz. Hemos conocido que, de los frutos de este árbol, se obtiene una grasa vegetal comestible utilizada tradicionalmente en la cocina saheliana, que también se emplea en las industrias chocolatera y cosmética. La presencia de esta planta en la finca, nos plantea la perspectiva de intentar su propagación e injerto con yemas del ejemplar adulto fértil, a fin de que pueda ser extendido su cultivo. The farm of Muñoz's family is placed in Santiago de las Vegas-Rincón Street, Boyeros, Havana, and it has very important collections of fruit and ornamental species. Since de beginnings of the1960 decade, there is in the property one species, now days with remarkable dimensions, given to the family by the notorious engineer Alberto Fors. However, the taxonomic identity of the species was unknown up to the present. A bibliographic research was made using the common name, and it found that under the name karate (it means butter in Western Africa) it is identify Vitellaria paradoxa, a Sapotaceae family tree whose description coincides with the tree cultivated into the Muñoz's family farm. We have known that, from it fruits may be obtained edible oil which is traditionally used in Sahel region, and also is used in chocolate and cosmetic industries. The presence of this plant in the farm, propose us the goal of attempt propagation and vegetative reproduction of the adult pretending the extension of its culture.
