Gueishman Luis, Evelyn Domínguez Cabrera, Rosa Gaccio , Yohanna Ybañez, Celia Environment Sustainable Development Urban agriculture Medio ambiente Desarrollo Sustentable Agricultura Urbana Todos conocemos que el planeta tierra, además de ser único, es vulnerable, pero la humanidad aún no parece tener clara conciencia de ello, ya que a pesar de que hace años nos preocupamos por los problemas ambientales, continuamos ocasionándoles daños irreversibles. La urgencia de ofrecer respuesta a esta situación de deterioro, se observa con notable necesidad, en el espacio en que la misma repercute con más fuerza: la sociedad. Es por esto que desde la misma base social debemos desarrollar alternativas y detener la crisis social y ecológica que vivimos y que aumenta cada día. Uno de los principales problemas que enfrenta el hombre, como ser social y ser vivo, es la necesidad básica de alimento, la cual es satisfecha, en gran medida, por la agricultura. Sin embargo, esta a su vez, puede agravar la situación ambiental sino se emplea un manejo adecuado y sostenible del sistema agrícola. Es por esto que el objetivo de este trabajo es reflexionar acerca del papel de la sociedad para el cuidado del medio ambiente, tomando como ejemplo de caso, el escenario productivo de la Agricultura Urbana y Suburbana de Cuba. Este movimiento, ha tenido un vertiginoso desarrollo en la producción de alimentos, en las ciudades y periferias del país, logrando alcanzar impactos en el orden económico, social, tecnológico y medioambiental. Ha logrado que los productores hagan suya la obligación de mantener saludable el medio ambiente natural que le proporciona no solo el alimento, sino el espacio social donde habitan sus generaciones presentes y futuras. Earth is a unique and highly vulnerable planet; however, humankind does not seem to have a clear conscience of its vulnerability. Despite the worries of humankind for environmental problems, we continue causing irreversible damages to the planet. The urgency to provide a solution for this situation is observed notably in the space where its influence is the greatest: the society. Therefore, alternatives to this situation must be developed from the social base to stop the social and ecological crisis that we are facing. One of the main problems for humankind as a social being is feeding, which can be fulfilled mainly by agriculture. Agriculture, in turn, can worsen the negative impact on the environment if the agroecosystem is not properly managed. The aim of this paper is to provide ideas about the role of society in protecting the environment, using as a study case the productive scenarios of urban and suburban agriculture in Cuba. This movement has had a vertiginous development in the production of foodstuff in the cities and its peripheries, resulting in a positive social, technological and environmental impact. It has also developed the understanding of farmers about the need of keeping a healthy environment, not only as a source of agricultural products, but also as the social space where the present and future generations inhabit.
