H.E. Moore & Stearm), el níspero (Manilkara sapota L. van Royen) y el caimito (Chrysophyllum caimito L.). Los objetivos de la investigación se centraron esencialmente en determinar las posibles causas que han incidido en que el canistel sea una especie subutilizada y casi exótica en la provincia, incrementar el efectivo poblacional del taxón y analizar algunos aspectos morfométricos del fruto y las semillas. En la metodología se utilizó el método histórico legal para la obtención y validación de informaciones de este frutal, así como la determinación de la frecuencia de aparición (cantidad de veces) que otras especies de sapótaceas asociadas al canistel están presentes en los conteos. Para el fomento del crecimiento poblacional se utilizó el método biointensivo de siembra de árboles con labranza doble del suelo. Los resultados revelaron en el área piloto de estudio una depresión del número de individuos del 95,7 %, al mismo tiempo que se logró incrementar el efectivo poblacional, resultando las principales causas que han llevado al olvido de esta especie de origen antrópico y bioculturales. Canistel (Pouteria campechana H.B.K Baehni) is a close relative of other widely cultivated sapotaceae species and very popular in Cuba, for example the sapote (Pouteria sapota Jack. H.E Moore & Stearm), the loquat (Manilkara sapota L. van Royen), and the caimito (Chrysophyllum caimito L.). The objective of this research was based on defining the possible causes that have brought the canistel to be an under- used species and almost exotic in the province; as well as increasing the effective population of this taxon and analyzing some morphometric aspects of the fruit and its seeds. To describe the methological process employed it can be said that it was used the historical-legal method for the obtainment and validation of information about this fruit, together with the determination of how frequent would emerge other species of the same family associated to canistel that appeared during the counting period. For the furtherance of its population growing it was used the bio-intensive method of tree sowing with double farming of soil. The results evinced that in the taillight area of study there is a population decrease to 95.7 %. At the same time, it was possible to expand the population effective. The main reasons why this species has gone to oblivion are owing to anthropological and bio-cultural origin.
