Alternative method of seed drying and conservation
Main Article Content
Abstract
The low moisture content is an important factor to obtain a high seed longevity during the storage. The aim of this paper was to test the use of the rice - sodium chloride mixture as desiccant. The seeds were placed in a tightly closed chamber with this mixture. The seed moisture content decreased until to values of 5,0 and 7,5 % for the following species: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv: Placero-H, pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.ex Lam) Duch. ex Poir cv: VME, cv: Marinelis), and corn (Zea mays L. cv: Sanjuanero, cv: Francisco mejorado. Their storage and conservation during 6 month in glass containers for two temperatures (ambient 27oC) and (refrigerator 5oC) guaranteed their viability and germination above 90 %.
