Effect of growth regulators on germination and seedlings growth of seed of Capsicum annuum L.
Main Article Content
Abstract
The effect of growth regulators, alone or in combinations, on germination and early seedling growth of three pepper varieties were studied. Seeds of ´Tropical- CW-3´, ‘True Heart 28´ y ´Verano-1´ varieties were placed in Petri dishes with filter paper dampened with solutions of AIA, AG3, KIN and BAP (0,1 mg.L-1) and maintained in a growth chamber with 16 hour- photoperiod and 25 ± 2 C temperature for ten days. At the end of the experiment, germination percentage, seedling height, hypocotyls and radicle lengths, LH/LR ratio, as well as total dry weights were evaluated. Results showed that the applications of KIN or AG3, increased and the AIA inhibited the germination percentage but the response depended on the variety. AG3, along or in combinations with cytokinins increased the germination and hypocotyls lengths in Verano-1. These results suggest that the application of growth regulators may have a positive effect on pepper seed germination.
