Abstract

Core collections are useful tools for management and preserving of genetic resources. A core collection for the cultivated germplasm of pineapple was established from the results obtained on the morphoagronomical characterization of 48 accessions of the base collection.A Cluster Analysis was carried out with the descriptors selected, following the criterion of Ward’s cluster, and a stratified selection of the accessions was also performed. In order to validate the collection, the adequacy of the selection for molecular diversity was verified. The representativeness of the variability for quantitative and qualitative attributes was checked by means of Dhiwan´s coefficient andSpearman´s correlation, respectively. The collection pattern of variability evidenced three groups, corresponding with three of the horticultural groups described in pineapple. The Cluster Analysis demonstrated the low genetic variability of pineapple germplasm. Finally, 16 accessions were selected to form the core, where genetic distance was maximized (especially expressed by the SSR). The curator´s criterion and the geographic distribution allowed an adequate material selection, mostly coming from Eastern region. The values of quantitative variability (non modified Dhiwan 87 % and modified Dhiwan 112 %) and the qualitative ones (Rs=0,980**) showed the certainty in the selection. The core collection included, besides the cultivated accessions, three related species that represented the 33,3 % of the corresponding collection base.
