Abstract

Along the year 2007 eriofioideos mites were found for the first time in Cuba in guava plants (Psidium guajava L.) cv. “Enana” in experimental plots located at the Institute for Fundamental Research on Tropical Agriculture (INIFAT), Boyeros municipality, Havana. The mites were little and have a light yellow lemon colour, with irregular distribution on both, up and down leaves surfaces. The taxonomic studies identified three different species of mites: the most abundant was Tegolophus spp., followed by Tegolophus guavae (Boczek) Eriophyidae and one specimen of Davisella haramotonis, Family Diptiliomiopidae Keifer. The abundance of infested plants was relativily higher from April to September (50-70%). There were 25.3 % plants with partial defoliation and 6.9% with total defoliation. Several fruits showed damages characterized by obscure brown blemish and purple colours, disseminated over the fruit surfaces in irregular forms. These mites could be a potential pest for the guava “Enana” culture in Cuba.
