Role of society to facing environmental damage

Abstract
Earth is a unique and highly vulnerable planet; however, humankind does not seem to have a clear conscience of its vulnerability. Despite the worries of humankind for environmental problems, we continue causing irreversible damages to the planet. The urgency to provide a solution for this situation is observed notably in the space where its influence is the greatest: the society. Therefore, alternatives to this situation must be developed from the social base to stop the social and ecological crisis that we are facing. One of the main problems for humankind as a social being is feeding, which can be fulfilled mainly by agriculture. Agriculture, in turn, can worsen the negative impact on the environment if the agroecosystem is not properly managed. The aim of this paper is to provide ideas about the role of society in protecting the environment, using as a study case the productive scenarios of urban and suburban agriculture in Cuba. This movement has had a vertiginous development in the production of foodstuff in the cities and its peripheries, resulting in a positive social, technological and environmental impact. It has also developed the understanding of farmers about the need of keeping a healthy environment, not only as a source of agricultural products, but also as the social space where the present and future generations inhabit.
