Caloric stress risk assessment and management in dairy cattle of the Managuaco Agricultural Enterprise
Main Article Content
Abstract
The adaptation of cattle farming to climate change and climatic variability is one of Cuba's strategic priorities. For this reason, there are several actions implemented with the support of AGROCADENAS project. That is why this work purposes to evaluate the caloric stress risk in dairy cattle of Managuaco agriculture enterprise, as well as, to recommend actions for the genetic improvement and the developing of the productive ecosystem. The evaluation of risks was carried out using the temperature and humidity index (THI), starting from historical series of daily data recorded at the Sancti Spíritus meteorological station. The estimate of risks for future scenarios was made starting from the model HadGEM-ES-scenario RCP 8.5 for Cuba. A temporary analysis of the THI behavior and the time duration of each stress category were obtained. It was estimated the impact on milk production indicators related to losses of voluntary feed and milk production. Several actions are proposed for the adaptation to the climate change, and to increase the resilience ability.
