Abstract

Cabbage seeds obtained in the Institute Fundamental Research on Tropical Agriculture “Alejandro de Humboldt” were evaluated in different experiments carried out in three different years, to evaluate seed germination, number of seeds per gram, weight of red and dark seeds, weight of 100 seeds and the pathology of each sample. The work was carried out following the international rules for seed research. The main results showed a relationship among the reddish color of the seeds with the decrease of germination. The periodic samplings demonstrated that black seeds presented higher germination. In each campaign the homogeneity increased, so this suggested that higher adaptation to the tropical conditions exists. It could be also verified that as years come on the incidence of Alternaria brassicicola increases in seeds, parameter that reduces the quality of the germination, that’s why this should be matter of a better general handling of the crop, and at the same time for continuing on the breeding program.
