Agroeconomic impact of the nitrogen fertilization recommendations in Cuban sugarcane plantations
Main Article Content
Abstract
The guide of all the activities in sugar cane fertilization is the Service of Fertilizer Recommendations and Amendments (SERFE). This service has to deal with the establishment of control plots (CP) in order to study the effectiveness of fertilizer recommendations. Each Control Plot was formed by three treatments (a control one without fertilizer, the recommended rates by SERFE and a twofold dose) distributed in stripes of six furrows each in commercial areas. The results of 305 harvests distributed throughout the country are shown, prevailing ratoon crops (95 %) and Cambisol soils (43,8 %). The analysis of harvest data shows that: a) SERFE has an effectiveness and an efficiency of 74 and 38 % respectively; b) the rates for high – yield fields are underestimated, on the other hand for low-yield fields the rates are overestimated; c) the criterion for the expected yield in order to estimate the nitrogen rate is carried out, apparently without technical bases which makes it unreliable, this paper shows the need for carrying out adjustments to achieve a higher efficiency of the system. To estimate rise in yield when nitrogenous fertilizer is applied and the critical dose of this nutrient were obtained anlytical functions; and a model for Net Present Value (NPV) calculation was settle down for different soil-cultivation conditions defined in the study. The NPV for all the studied soils was higher in the treatment with the calculated economic good rate, which settles down that the effective doses in the SERFE aren’t enough to reach the maximum economic benefits, all that leads to the necessity of carrying out adjustments to achieve a bigger efficiency of the system.
