Natural agrochemicals from Cuban plants

Abstract
Plants constitute a natural alternative for pest control that attacks economical important crops, decreasing environmental risk. In this paper, insecticidal and antifungal activity of ethanolic extracts of Pinus caribaea; Gliricidia sepium; Juniperus lucayana; Thuja orientalis and Melia azedarach were evaluated against Mocis latipes, Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, besides, a bioassay-guided fractionation of J. lucayana by column chromatography and HPLC was conduced. The best results of insecticidal and antifungal activity were shown by Melia azedarach L. and Juniperus lucayana extracts, respectively. Fractionation of ethanolic extract from the wood of Juniperus lucayana afforded eight known compounds named: cedrol, allo-cedrol, α-bisabolol, widdrol, β-chamigrenic acid,10,11-dihydroxy-b- bisabolene, naringenine, aromadendrine and four new compounds: 12-hydroxy-a- pseudowiddrene, 3-hydroxypseudowiddran-6(7)-en-4-ol, 15-hydroxyallo-cedrol and 12- hydroxywiddrol. The effect of isolated compounds on B. cinerea fungus was also studied.
