Behavior of maize seeds in “ex situ” conservation

Abstract

The phytogenetic resources conservation and its sustainable use, increases its worldwide importance day by day. A most known and used way to the maintenance of this resources is the ex situ conservation. Nevertheless, the establishment of the genebank collection needs the research for the adequate parameters determination to different species storing. The purpose of this paper was the determination of the best storing conditions at short and medium term (at temperatura 5±2 °C) of two maize varieties. The varieties were stored at aluminum cover and glass container with two seed moisture content values. Each sample was extracted from the chamber every four months during 24 months and the germination tests were made. The obtained results proved the existence of a differential behavior between varieties into the specie for the ex situ conservation at cold chamber. Although low seed moisture values and glass container that were the best to seeds conservation.
