Genetic bases of commercial sugar cane cultivars in Cuba in the period of 1965-2008
Main Article Content
Abstract
The present work is aimed to determine the genetic relationship of sugarcane cultivars used from 1965 to 2008 in Cuba. To estimate the degree of contribution to commercial germplasm of each ancestor two indices were calculated: the percentage of participation and the percentage of genetic contribution. The result showed a combined genealogical tree of 58 cultivars exploited by Cuban sugarcane breeding program. A dendrogram, based on pairwise genealogical distances, separated varietal groups and independent cultivars for three periods considered from 1965 to 1980, 1981 to 1999 and 2000 to 2008. The genetic information obtained using pedigree information from major sugarcane cultivars used commercially, would be employed to assist the recommendation of novel sources to widen the genetic base of the introgression programs of sugarcane.
