Potentialities of the existing medicinal flora in suburban farms to generate goods and services in Santiago de Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of the work was to assess the social perception of the potential of the medicinal flora existing in suburban farms to generate goods and services in Santiago de Cuba. Once the farms were selected, samplings were carried out to establish a base list of the medicinal plants present on the farms, and then semi-structured interviews were applied to people linked to research on medicinal plants and phytopharmaceutical production. In the studied farms the composition of medicinal plants is stable with the decrease of a botanical family with the change of period. The species most in demand both for domestic and for the production of phytopharmaceuticals have a representation between 26 % and 37 % within the species found on farms that have medicinal use as the main utility. Obtaining syrups from Matricaria chamomilla L. and Plectranthus amboinicus (Lour.) Spreng. and the treatments of colds and muscle aches were the products and ailments treated with the highest percentage of reference. There is a good social perception about the potential of the medicinal flora existing on these farms to generate goods and services, as well as the need to use the existing potential in these agroecosystems to improve their availability.
