Abstract

The Program of Genetic Improvement of agaves was developed from 1993 to 2006, of the "Liliana Dimitrova" Horticultural Research Institute (IIHLD), and consisted in the exploration of three existing sources of genetic variability in Cuba: 1, Development of agaves from five plants mothers prospected in fields of production of henequen, with little thorns in the margins of the leaves; 2, Development of agaves from the segregation of henequen (Agave fourcroydes. L.); 3, Development of agaves from the segregation of Hybrid 11648. As results selected to 10 of Agaves sp (97; 100; 29; 30-5; 30-25; 30-26; 30-27; 30-37; 31-

10, 32-29 and witness) and by means of the application of techniques of multivariate analyses the following variables were evaluated: length of the leaf; wide of the leaf; amount of leaf/plant; percentage of dry fiber; dry fiber yield (g/plant); tensile resistance of the fiber (kg/f); height of the plant; leaves cascades/plant and total of leaf/plant. In addition it was made the chemical characterization of the fiber on the base of the determination of the percentage of ash and lignin and the degree of curing of the fiber (DP). The accession 31- 10 is one of the six having the highest yields of dry fiber and it was the one which gave off leaves with the fewer number of spines in the margins; this accession will assume hereafter the name subinerme clone “Liliana CH".
