Abstract

The study of soil microbiota aims, among other objectives, to evaluate the existing microbial diversity as an important factor to consider in soil fertility. However, there are few studies that assess the effect that this microbiota may exert on agroecosystems, especially those with low fertility. In Cuba, proper management of these soils is necessary to achieve good productive results. In this work, the concentration of microorganisms was determined both as functional groups (phosphorus solubilizers and atmospheric nitrogen fixers) and structural groups (actinomycetes, fungi, yeasts, and total heterotrophic bacteria) in a low-fertility, agro-genic Red Lixiviated Ferralitic soil in agricultural areas of INIFAT, and compared with a forested area within the same institution. Direct plating on Petri dishes with selected culture media and the counting of Colony Forming Units (CFU) on selective media were used.It was demonstrated that the total number of nitrogen-fixing and phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms ranged between 1.2 and 1.6 x 104 UFC.g-1, respectively. The total number of microorganisms, fungi, yeasts, and actinomycetes showed variations among them. Differences were also observed between the different functional groups of soil microorganisms studied when compared with those from a well-conditioned area (forested zone), which may be due, among other factors, to the level of overexploitation and poor agricultural practices to which the soils have been subjected.Studies of this type are important because soil microbiology is an essential aspect for evaluating proper soil exploitation, considering the functions performed by microorganisms and their importance as indicators of fertility. The results demonstrated the need to implement actions that increase organic matter levels in the soils and reduce the impact on the resistant microbiota.
