INIFAT’s Palmetum inventory: 2024 actualization
Main Article Content
Abstract
Palm trees (family Arecaceae) play an important role in the landscape and vegetation of Cuba; also they have a role in the daily life of people, due to its medicinal, ornamental and industrial utility. Among the conservation strategies of this family are in situ collections (located in protected areas), and ex situ collections in botanical gardens and/or genebanks that constitute representative living collections. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the diversity, phytosanitary status and the potential of the Palmetum of the Institute of Fundamental Research on Tropical Agriculture “Alejandro de Humboldt”. Ninety-one individuals were identified that represent five families, 34 genres and 46 species. The 58 % of individuals have a good phytosanitary status and the main damages include the presence of termites and damages caused by anthropic actions. A sketch was made with the location of each individual, to facilitate their location by visitors to the institution. A model was presented to initiate studies of dasometric values. The new inventory was compared with previous ones and the loss of eight species and the introduction of a new one were detected. The most abundant species are Elaeis guineensis, Roystonea regia and the Adonidia merilli. The Palemtum has four endemic species of great importance for the conservation of plant diversity in Cuba, representatives of the genre Acrocomia, Roystonea and Coccothrinax, the latter one is in critical danger of extinction according to the Red List of Cuban Flora.
