Abstract

Climate smart agriculture (CSA) is emerging as a feasible solution to face current environmental and social challenges. It is based on three main pillars: the increase of productivity and income, adaptation, and mitigation of greenhouse gases (GHG) emission. This proposal takes advantage of knowledge, technologies and principles of agroecology, but the emphasis is placed on climate change. It is not a unique approach to all agricultural systems. The goal is to find the best combination to transform every food system, in order to manage the current climate challenges and to build resilience to the future impacts. All productive systems must be transformed and along the whole value chain, so they can respond to local and national expectations. CSA takes into consideration the interdependence between climate, ecosystems, biodiversity, society and sustainable development. It also acknowledges the diversity of actors involved in climate action. Agriculture diversity- understood as genetic crop diversity, diversity among fields, agroecosystems and landscapes; food diversity among diets and regions; as well as the multiplicity of agricultural practices- can contribute to solve many problems that agriculture is facing today.
