Contribution of INIFAT to vegetable diversity employed in Urban, Suburban and Familiar Agriculture of Cuba

Abstract
In the present work were evaluated the vegetable contributions of INIFAT being in use under Cuban farming practices, which were grouped as leafy, fruits, bulbs and roots cultivars, on condition to be registered in the national Official List of Commercial Varieties. Eleven municipalities, corresponding to the same number of provinces were evaluated with regard to those varieties employed in Urban, Suburban and Familiar Agriculture (AUSUF) vegetable productions. According to the amount of times that each variety was recorded, series of frequencies were made to find out the existence of each cultivar in the sampled universe. Among leafy vegetables, the most extended group, were recorded six species with 11 varieties (mainly lettuce and Chinese chard), in fruits six species with nine cultivars (particularly eggplant, kidney bean, cucumber and pepper), while in bulbs and roots three species with four varieties (chiefly radish, carrot and onion); a number of them play a dominant part in each group. It is recommended to keep the evaluation and selection of the germplasm in order to solve existing pools respect to better adapted forms. Also was advised the need to rescue those valuable cultivars under low utilization or in risk of erosion.
