Methodological guide for the establishment and validation of core collections in the ex situ preserved germoplasm
Main Article Content
Abstract
The improvement of the access and use of germoplasm collections has become one of the main tasks of the activity of genetic resources. The development of the concept of core collections, as well as the theory of Frankel and Brown, has had an important paper in the promotion of this objective. On the base of the acquired experience, and supported by the experience accumulated at the international level, a Guide is proposed that doesn't seek to be a rigid methodology for the establishment of core collections, but rather a flexible group of steps that should be taken into consideration to achieve with success the purpose of improving the access to crops germoplasm and their wild relatives. The followed outline, has five stages (convenience, analysis of the information, selection of the core, handling of the core and its use), that are are discussed thoroughly in the work.
