Abstract

The use of species and cultivars resistant to salinity like Placero-H will increase the number of areas to produce vegetables, by using substrates in adverse conditions (water, soil and weather), like the ones near the shore. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of saline water, regarding the substrate and the cultivar. The results will contribute to establish a strategy for using and managing bad quality water in the system of the Urban Agriculture. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse and the cultivar Placero-H was sown in pots containing 4 kinds of substrates: Sand (100%), Sand + Compost (50:50), Sand + Zeolite (50:50), Sand + Compost + Zeolite (33: 33: 33). There were 20 plants per substrate, 10 were irrigated with good quality water (EC: 0.83 ds/ m) and the other ones with diluted see water (EC: 7.36 ds/ m), which is classified as moderately saline by Rhoades (1992). The evaluation of growth characters and phonological observations were done during the plant's life cycle and yield was studied at harvest. Plant's sown in substrates containing organic matter and organic matter + zeolite showed the best behaviour, as could be seen in the final yield (Kg/ plant). The results confirm that it is possible to use bad quality water in affected areas by managing properly the substrate and the cultivar.
