New pumpkin variety Marinelis: culture and seed production
Main Article Content
Abstract
Pumpkin variety ‘Marinelis‘ is distinguished for having a medium size, with a productive cycle of 80-90 days, average yields of 15t/ha and a good response against the mean diseases affecting the culture. The average fruit weight is 1500g with a strong yellow-orange pulp, fine compact grain and excellent organoleptic qualities. 90% of fruits have a pear shape with different neck lengths. Fruits contain 300 seeds as average and weight 28g. Conserved seeds at 3.8% humidity maintain 90% germination after 24 months; even after 3 years they showed a good viability when conserved at low humidity contents at cold and room temperatures. The introduction of this variety in agro productive systems increases the diversity of C. moschata, providing farmers with a material of medium size and excellent organoleptic characteristics. The response of ‘Marinelis‘ to the level of organic matter in the soil and the presence of diseases allow the reduction of agrochemical application, reducing the negative environmental impact associated to these chemicals. Yield increases achieved with this variety allow a gain of 1341 Cuban pesos per hectare. ‘Marinelis‘ is registered in the Official List of Varieties.
