Anatomic aspects and viability of papaw (Carica papaya L.) seeds variety submitted to a long storage period

Abstract
With the aim of enhancing knowledges on diverse elements having influence on Red Maradol papaw seed quality there were assessed, anatomic, physiologic and biochemical factors were assessed in a commercial lot conserved for 28 months under refrigerated conditions at 6 ± 2°C. With that purpose, a lot sample was divided into three fractions for evaluation of the amount of normal and without embryo seeds present; internal structures of both were compared by mean of histological cuts and observations under optic microscopy. Seed viability in each fraction was evaluated by using topographic tetrazolium test and results were compared with those of routine germination test. Results showed that in the biggest seeds the percentage of vanes was insignificant but increased in the smallest diameter of the seed lot. Main seminal structures as seed coat, endosperm and embryo remained intact in those seeds that were able to form embryobut in vain one just were present those structures formed by the integuments surrounding the ovule but indeed fertilization failed and consequently the embryogenesis. Tetrazolium test showed that biggest seeds had the higher percentage of total or partial damages but on the contrary those of intermediate size were more viable and it was reaffirmed by the germination test. Several degrees of dead or weak tissue have been found in seeds of all stratus but commonly the declinetend to begin by cotyledons.
