Agrobiodiversity in Sierra del Rosario, Cuba: coffee (Coffea arabica L.) and other keys of its configuration
Main Article Content
Abstract
Coffee culture is a major historic source of the high levels of agrobiodiversity featured in some agroecological zones at Sierra del Rosario. By means of surveys and participant observation the wide distribution and strong market importance of coffee culture was remarked. Coffee plantation during XIX century was part of the introduction of many plant genetic resources like mango, rose apple and breadfruit. Nowadays coffee is part of a high structural diversity of many agro ecosystems because an economic resilience strategy of the peasant farmers. Coffee culture also favors agrobiodiversity thanks to its coexistence with a high number of cultivated herbaceous plants and shade trees, cultivated or not. During the XX century, some coffee systems were reconfigured to hold a high number of ornamental collections, as it happened with the present Soroa´s Orchidarium. This condition has influenced the species richness of many home gardens of the region, especially at urban and suburban environments.
