Implications of plant varieties protection: the Cuban case
Main Article Content
Abstract
Obtaining new plant varieties is of great importance for the development of agriculture and technology, as well as for world food security. These varieties can result from years of research and investment; hence breeders created ways to protect new varieties, prevent illegal practices, and recover breeding costs. This paper deals with the legal regime for the protection of plant varieties. The objectives were to update on the most relevant aspects of plant protection and analyze its implications in less developed countries with emphasis on the Cuban case. The results address the role of UPOV on the world stage, the position of the country in terms of biodiversity, the Cuban legal body that governs plant protection and provides elements on the benefits and detriments of plant varieties protection.
