Main Article Content
Abstract
Food waste in the home is produced by consumers who reject foods that can still be consumed or by bad habit of consumption, as well as poor management of purchased agricultural products and processed foods. The objective of this work was to determine the level of knowledge about waste of foods and its management in their home of school children. The research was carried out with the 6th and 2nd grade groups of the schools: “Pepito Tey”, “Arquimides Colina Antunes”, “Julio Antonio Mella” and “Celso Stakeman” of the Santiago Popular Council. The sixth graders with a total of 146, received educational talks and later surveys were carried out regarding the topics taught Second graders, for a total of 230 children, received talks on the importance of consumption and safety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Subsequently, a drawing contest was held where they should reflect the knowledge acquired. The results indicate that in most of the homes of the former, they maintain a responsible attitude by avoiding waste, they carry out a good management of agricultural and processed products, they use adequate storage conditions and responsible temperature management. The second graders presented a high understanding of the conversations, reflected through the drawings presented. The research provides important elements that can be considered to address this issue in children of these ages.
