Abstract

Grain drying assures the inhibition of the biological deterioration processes and safe storage. The Cuban agricultural systems has insufficiencies of drying facilities, therefore it is necessary to evaluate the factors that contributes to improve the efficiency of the crop dryers. In this paper the results related to the drying kinetic of soybean varieties Conquista e IGH-24 in an industrial crop dryer and in the laboratory essay are presented as well as a study of the physical and chemical characteristic that allowed to explain scientifically the varietal behaviour during this process. It was found that the water diffusion constant of the soybean varieties studied rank from 5,9 (g.min1/2) x 10-2 to 18,8 (g.min1/2) x 10-2 when the drying temperature varied from 40OC to 55OC. The physical and chemical study showed that the differences in the varietal behaviour were due to physical reasons. The seeds of the variety IGH-24 lose more water during the process as the rate seed coat mass/cotyledon mass is lesser than Conquista variety, It facilities the water diffusion to environment. Furthermore the increase of the drying temperature from 40OC to 45OC increased the drying constants value of Conquista seeds in 1,32 times. As a result, the drying time was reduced from 6 to 4,5 hours, without germination affected.
