Enrichment of the INIFAT herbarium through plant collecting in protected areas of Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Institute for Fundamental Research on Tropical Agriculture “Alexander von Humboldt” (INIFAT) maintains a developing herbarium primarily dedicated to documenting important species of agricultural biodiversity. Within this framework, wild relatives of cultivated plants represent a key focus, aligned with the objectives of the project "Introduction of new agricultural methods for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, including phytogenetic and zoogenetic resources, in productive landscapes of selected Cuban areas. In accordance with these goals, seven expeditions were conducted between 2022 and 2024 to two managed resource protected areas (Ciénaga de Zapata and Jobo Rosado) and two wildlife refuges (Tunas de Zaza and Delta del Cauto). In total, 170 new records belonging to 35 species, 14 genera, and 12 families were located, collected, and incorporated into the INIFAT Herbarium. The most represented genera were: Ipomoea (32.94%), Annona (15.29%), and Eugenia (12.94%). The collection also includes phytogenetic resources from the genera Capsicum, Citrus, Manilkara, Oryza, and Pouteria.
