Abstract
The combined use of low temperatures and modified atmospheres ease fruits and
vegetables storage keeping the commercial quality longer. For this former reason, the present work was performed at the “Liliana Dimitrova” HRI with the purpose of knowing the postharvest behavior during the shelf period of the Patchoi chard Shanghai cultivar, harvested in two moments: 20 and 30 dat; after that the chards were treated and preserved in plastic boxes and in bio-oriented polypropylene (BOPP), at room temperature (25 – 30 °C; 50 – 70% RH) and cold temperatures (8 – 10 °C; 90 – 92% RH); weight was evaluated at the beginning and physiological weight losses every third day, as well as the physiological characteristics of the chards. The results showed that the moment the harvest is done doesn’t affect shelf life, and that weight losses diminish if the chards are preserved in BOPP, extending the product useful life 15 to 17 days, keeping the sensible characteristics, pleasing the costumer needs as the last link of the productive chain.
